So I caught an early episode when it first aired and was fairly underwhelmed, kind of like, how much milk do they think they can squeeze from this cow anyway? I caught the last Terminator movie on a plane. Same feeling. But I never bothered to delete my Tivo season pass and all of a sudden, the network is airing the show daily and I'm hooked. At least it pretends the third Terminator movie never happened (kind of like Superman Returns ignores all the installments that followed number 2).

I'm not saying this is compelling TV. Often, it feels like a lot of padding. And the writer's strike couldn't have helped much. But one thing is clear. Everybody on this show is so damn pretty.

Lena Heady, who I initially resisted as a baffling replacement for Linda Hamilton, has grown on me even though she mumbles her way through the opening credits voice over. When I found out she was another brit faking an American accent, she was instantly ten times hotter. But everybody on this show looks like they were beat to death with a pretty stick. I'd like to take a long bubble bath with the mom, the son, and the robot... And boy, Brian Austin Green of Beverly Hills 90210 sure has grown up. If he can somehow lower his voice two or three octaves, he may have a future in show business yet.

And finally, Summer Glau, the "good" terminator, must be every dirty old man's dirty little secret. I know she's mine. Yikes!

I'm not going to go into how great it is because I'm sure you've heard all th critical acclaim its getting, but here I am, enjoying my 1960's dark drama, and here comes my nemesis, Ayn Rand. I really HATE Ayn Rand. I REALLY want the hours of my life back that I spent reading "The Fountainhead" now I'm freaking out that Mad Men might be some objectivist propaganda. Do I have to go out and read f*cking "Atlas Shrugged" now, too? Wasn't "The Fountainhead" punishment enough? My brain can't take another Randian rape fantasy, please god, no!

I'm thinking though, that perhaps they are treating Ayn Rand the same way they treat smoking, drinking, rampant infidelity, racism, classism, sexism and unprotected promiscuous sex. A fact of the day it was made in, something we see as harmful and foolish now through the lens of time. Since the "Superman" character is Don Draper, and he's miserable, I'm thinking maybe? Peggy's ruthless too, damn. I hadn't had her pegged for a villain, but she's just awful. I'd trust Chuck Bass from "Gossip Girl" or any bad guy from "Heroes" before I'd want to deal with her!

I probably wouldn't be nearly as into a teen soap if I hadn't started watching it a month after spending Christmas in Manhattan myself, upper west side in my case. The exterior shots and wardrobe are the main things that got me watching in the first place, but some of the acting is actually good. And by that I mean Chuck, he's my favorite character on tv right now; a jaded but sensitive asshole who nobody trusts EXCEPT when they REALLY need him. He's an awfully deep character for a teen soap.

I admit that most of the acting is pretty awful, but its really good at what it is, which is essentially what the reviews I read said. Somehow I'm hooked on it. When the acting and writing get bad the visuals keep me watching. Anybody else seen it?

Apparently, Dick Tracy was giving me a ride home while I was in the back seat drawing comics as Kim Basinger sat to my right. Plus Dick Tracy wasn't cartoon-looking. He was an actual person who looked a lot more like Dick Tracy than Warren Beatty. Dick Tracy and Pussy were talking about something or other that I don't recall, but I do remember seeing Kim Basinger looking somewhat uncomfortable. Soon she decided to get into the front seat with Dick Tracy and Pussy. I suspect it was because she wasn't impressed with my art.

So I'm totally embarrassed to admit that I'm hooked on this new reality series called "The Pick-Up Artist" currently airing on VH1.

Pick-Up follows the typical reality show formula -- in each episode the contestants must tackle a task and the least successful is eliminated. But there's something endearing about this particular ragtag crew of mostly 20-something socially awkward guys learning how to approach women in bars without instantly repulsing everyone in the room or choking on their own insecurities before they even get the chance to be rejected by another person.

True, there's something insidious about the underlying mission of the show, not to mention host and pick-up guru "Mystery" who teaches gimmicky canned speeches and spews jargon like "gambit" (a conversation starter) and "DHV" (demonstration of higher value). Mystery is faithfully assisted by sycophantic "wingmen" Matador and J Dog, also decked out in what can only be described as the Burning Man fashion line available exclusively at K-Mart.

And yet...despite what's off-putting about the premise, host and his cohorts, this is really about a brotherhood of confidence-challenged young men challenging themselves to work past their fear of rejection and present themselves to the world as people of value. Which, in a way, is kind of sweet.

Two of the most colorful contestants are already gone..."Spoon", a bespectacled young Asian man whose social anxiety was so crippling, he voted himself off the show and spineless yet sympathetic 45 year-old virgin Fred.

When I was a kid back in the 1970s, I noticed that older animated cartoons like Bugs Bunny and Popeye were better drawn and better animated than current cartoons like The Superfriends and Scooby Doo. And at the time, I was like, "How can these old-fangled toons be better than the current toons since we supposedly live in a more advanced era than when those old-school toons first came out." Then for years, I came to terms with the notion that newer animated toons may never surpass the quality of their predecessors. But just recenty, I realized that animated cartoons today have equaled and even surpassed the quality of toons like Bugs Bunny and Popeye. I thought back to the early-to-mid 1990s and noticed that a lot of good-quality animated toons had been produced back then. That was around the time that The Little Mermaid debuted as well as The Simpsons, Toy Story and Reboot-- the first all-computer-animated weekly TV series.

With all that being the case, I'm very happy to know that today's toons are getting better, stronger and faster than the toons of previous eras. Today's toons are so well-crafted that even the lousy ones are good. Could this be because there's more use of computers in the animation process? Well whatever the reason, cartoons today are overall better than they were in the age of Bugs Bunny and Popeye. Or at least that's my opinion.

So far, this group of house guests don't seem all that interesting but I watch because I like the dynamics of the game, a sort of strange reflection on social situations in more normal circumstances. I'm hoping as the game progresses that the contestants who are left will have grown on me and I will finally pick someone to route for.

As far as the twists this season has, the one that seems particularly boring is having an America's Player. Does anyone actually care if Eric succeeds in pulling off whatever task America gives him? I'd rather see Eric play his own game, and not pull stupid pranks, or try to sway house guests opinions about who to vote out. It seems pointless because it doesn't seem to give him any advantage one way or the other if he fails or succeeds. What do you all think?

Published: Monday, November 27, 2006
NEW YORK (AP) - Sometimes it takes only a word, or just a few, to become immortalized in television history.
The TV Land cable network has compiled a list of the 100 greatest catchphrases in TV, from the serious - Walter Cronkite's nightly signoff "And that's the way it is" - to the silly: "We are two wild and crazy guys!"
But this season my DVR recorded it by accident and I couldn't stop watching. The challenges were just too fun to watch (the flamingly gay posing traffic cop? GENIUS!!!!) and armed with my DVR remote I could skip through anything stupid (I miss my husband I miss my baby, wah wah wah).

But the thing that got me hooked was Home girl Jael, she might just be cool enough to make hooping cool again. Does it make me bi if I have a crush on Jael, or is she just too much like a cute boy to count? I knew she was too weird to win, but Natasha makes the show worth watching. The co-founder of Hanna-Barbera Studios, Barbera was born in New York in 1911 and began his career as a banker before teaming up with William Hanna in the late 1930s to create beloved cartoon characters like Tom & Jerry, The Jetsons and The Flintstones during their 60-year partnership.

The pair's first collaboration was entitled Puss Gets The Boot, which became the first outing for Tom & Jerry. Hanna and Barbera picked up seven Oscars for their Tom & Jerry cartoons. The acclaimed animators then created one of the first independent animation studios to produce TV series in 1957 and the hits kept coming with The Huckleberry Hound Show and Quick Draw McGraw. But the duo landed one of their most beloved shows in 1960 when The Flintstones debuted - the first animated series to air in primetime.

The show, about a stone age community, ran for six years and went on to become the top-ranking animated program. Other hits for Barbera and his partner included Top Cat, Scooby-Doo and Smurfs, which earned the pair two Daytime Emmy Awards in 1982 and in 1983 for Outstanding Children's Entertainment Series and a Humanitas Award in 1987.

Here, one of the characters is infected with nanites that put her into a coma and trick her into believing the Stargate Program is a mental delusion of hers. Estis tie, faris tion! ("Been there, done that" in Esperanto.) This episode was virtually identical to an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayler with the same theme. Come on! If you're going to ripoff other shows, at least do something DIFFERENT with the ripoff!

But more the point, that "your reality is a delusion" theme has been done many, many times throughout science fiction. But like I said before, if you have to ripoff other shows, at least do something different with it. This latest Atlantis episode was so pukifiying that I may stop watching the show altogether if they keep making more substandard episodes like that!

There's also the VCR and Tivo which do give you the ability to watch what you want when you want. But then after I discovered You Tube, I suddenly found that I can view a medium that allows me to directly contribute to its content. Yup! That's how TV should be. You get to see any and all shows you want when you want, and you can have some degree of control over the content. I'm not saying it's perfect, but You Tube does look to be a good alternative to TV. (But I'm still watching regular TV anyway.)

With the advent of DVD, more and more films are being presented in their proper aspect ratio. With HD TV looming on the horizon, it looks like we all will soon have to have widescreen TV sets (or plasma or whatever). Because of this, a growing number of TV series are being filmed in the widescreen format in anticipation of being seen on widescreen TVs.

Sorry for the long-winded set-up, but I just wanted to show where I'm coming from. WIth that out of the way, it looks like the widescreen format is now robbing older films of their proper aspect ratio. Whenever I watch a documentary or a biography and historical footage is used (newsreels or TV clips from the Golden Age), the tops and bottoms are cut off, presumably to have the footage match with the newer footage. But doesn't this simply reverse the problem of watching a widescreen film presented pan & scan? We're losing picture information - the worst is when the tops of heads are cut off.

Does this bug anyone else? Since we now have the technology, all footage should be presented as originally shot, don't you think?

In one episode, he calls for fund raiser for the war in Iraq despite the fact that the U.S. military budget is much larger than any other military budget on Earth.

Yes I know I misspelled Shontur or Shondur or whatever it is. I tried, but I could even get close enough for my Franklin to tell what I was spelling at. You know Science Fiction shontur, Fantasy shontur, est. Some kind good speller please help.

Warring this is a conspiracy theory

What ever happen to Science Fiction Shontur? Excepted for Star Track/wars books on the bottom shelve at the bookstore it’s all but gone. TV, movies and best seller will tell you it just doesn’t sell anymore. But why’s that? Most of the same people are still a life that were 10 years ago. Convention and chat groups are still going strong. So what happen?
What happen was the block-buster. Publishers don’t want a paperback, movie or TV show that sells well, they want a block-buster. They thought they’d found the answer with the Mega-shontur. Why not make a SF/Fantasy/thriller/horror/techno thriller? Put all of these shonturs together in one movie/book and you’ve got a block-buster every time.
None so are this is not really a bad thing in and of itself. True it take most of the money and puts into one kind of movie, paperback,tv show, still there should be some left over. There are some of us in each shontur that like what we like, not a diluted high-bread. But wait. If we are going to a real Science Fiction, or for that matter a real horror movie, then we might not go to there comic book, horror, tec-thriller, Science Fiction movie. So by up the Star Track moving and make a really bad movie, see it doesn’t sell have to stop making them, but will keep the contract so on one else can make a good one. Put out firefly, but don’t advertise it, see it doesn’t sell, but out of the goodness of our hart will buy off the author with a 10 year contract and put that on the back shelve.
Results, well we all have to go to the same Horror/Science Fiction/Comic book/Fantasy/Spy/Love Story/est. movie/paper back/TV show.
I guess I’ll see you all there.

In a nutshell, a band of hardcore Trek fans aims to supplement the five year mission NBC cut short when it cancelled the original series after season three. The team hopes to produce two episodes a year -- and in an agreement with the rights holders, is working for free and doesn't expect to earn a dime.

This labor of love features meticulously recreated sets (according to the article cited below, the bridge set cost over $100,000 to reproduce), and special effects that ain't too shabby for such a low-budget production. The acting is strictly amateur night but the obvious reverence for TOS and the implied wish fulfillment of geek passion in hyperdrive nearly compensates.

In this episode, Worf gets really pissed off at how the war with the Dominion is going, and so he decides to contact a mysterious alien race in the Gamma quadrant that's been rumored to have a military technology that could turn the tide of the war. Though Sisko doesn't authorize it, Worf goes ahead and seeks out that alien race by going through the stargate. (I know there's no stargates on DS9, but that's what happened in the dream.) Sisko knows that Worf is likely to disobey his orders, so he has the stargate reprogrmmed so it'll send Worf to a friendly planet where he'll later get picked up by starship and sent back to DS9. But Worf works around that and gates to the forbidden Gamma Quadrant planet anyway. Once there, he makes contact with the mysterious alien race and succesfully persuades them to fight the Dominion.

Yup! That's some weird stuff. And yes, I also know how nonsensicle the premise behind this unreal DS9 episode is. But it was a dream, therefore it doesn't have to make sense.

(I found this finally online. A children's show I used to watch as a kid in the 80's on Vancouver's public broadcasting channel the Knowledge Network. I was surprised to discover it was a children's art show for deaf children in the 60s and 70s!)

Plot Summary for
"Vision On" (1964)

TV-Series 1964-1976

This engaging children's television series involves a creative
group, consisting of a woman and two men, who can turn paint
splashed on a wall into coherent images of art and who always
manage to invent ingenious gadgets or conceive fun games for
themselves-often with limited resources. The series' logo is
its handwritten title, casting a 180-degree reflection and
becoming a bug-eyed, hopping creature.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0072579/

http://www.uktvindex.net/progs/show.php?prog_id=149

"Vision On was a children's TV series that attempted to cater
for both children with hearing difficulties and those with
adequate hearing.

The show was conducted by a number of co-hosts, one of whom
was Tony Hart who provided many of the arty features of the
series. He also introduced 'The Gallery' which featured the
work of children who had sent their work to 'Vision On.' This
was a concept he later mirrored in his series 'Take Hart' the
show that replaced 'Vision On' in 1976. Another of the show's
co-hosts was Sylvester 'The Doctor' McCoy.

The show wasn't just about art though, as it included some
gags, sketches and lively music.

The series ran on the BBC from 1964-76. It is a shame that a
series like this, that catered for those with hard of hearing
does not find a regular slot on children's television nowadays.

(Children's program for deaf children.)

I remember one very good episode where Max’s son meets Sigfreid’s daughter. After the two discover who the other really is, they talk about how their respective fathers were frequently away and that their father’s couldn’t tell them what they were actually secret agents at the time. On that, Sigfreid’s daughter says, “For years, I thought my father was a doctor on a cruise ship.” Get it?!
I like her. I think she's funny. But she's also hideously insecure about her looks & her position in the world of fame. Like Madonna, she surrounds herself with gay sycophants & admirers. But unlike Madonna, she's self-effacing, honest, & has a wicked sense of humor. And I like her kiss-and-tell style of celebrity bashing. These pompous twits certainly seem to deserve it.

In short, it's a very interesting show to me. Kathy wallows in shallowness, artifice, & her own neurosis, but she makes an art out of it. I'll keep watching. It's one of the best reality TV shows on the air right now.

Less emphasis on the random problems that kept the rag-tag fleet from reaching Earth that was the hallmark of the original series, much more meaningful emphasis on character development and the concept of the "enemy within." And recasting Starbuck as a woman was a great idea and the actress in the role is doing a marvelous job. Maybe I'm just a big old geek, but I'm diggin it.
